You drive to Lake Balaton yourself — and if the car stops on the way or once you arrive, we get you and your car home. Balaton is the closest of the big holiday lakes for drivers from Poland and its neighbours, and the route through Slovakia is short and mostly flat. What you must carry in the car
On this route a warning triangle and a reflective vest are mandatory — keep the vest in the cabin, not the boot, and put it on before you step out after a breakdown; ideally carry one per passenger. A first-aid kit is required in Slovakia and Hungary. Spare bulbs are useful too. Missing equipment can mean a fine if you are stopped.
Vignettes and tolls
Both countries on the way use electronic vignettes linked to the number plate — there is no windscreen sticker to buy. Slovakia's e-vignette is sold online at eznamka.sk. Hungary's e-matrica is sold at ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu; alongside the usual 10-day pass there is now a 1-day option, handy if you are only crossing the country. Buy both before you drive onto the motorway, and note that Hungary still uses the forint (HUF), so keep some local cash for smaller stops.
When to set off
The distance is short, but the queues are not. The worst are on the M7 between Budapest and the lake on summer Friday and Sunday evenings, and around the big lakeside festivals in July. If you can, travel midweek or early in the morning, and take a break every 2–3 hours — most breakdowns on this route come from tiredness at the end of the day.

The route is mostly flat and short, so there are no serious climbs; the usual failures are fatigue-related lapses near the end of the day, plus overheating in the M7 weekend queues and blowouts in the heat under a loaded car. What this route is like, stage by stage
This is the shortest of the holiday routes — from southern Poland it is only a few hours' drive. The first stage crosses Slovakia on the D1/D3 motorways toward Bratislava, past the Tatra foothills. The second stage begins at the border: from Rajka the short M15 joins the M1 through Győr to the edge of Budapest. The final stage is the M7, the Balaton motorway, running southwest to the southern shore, with regional roads reaching the northern shore. The route is short and flat, so there are no serious climbs — the main thing is not to underestimate tiredness or the summer weekend traffic near the lake.
