Vignettes, tolls and borders
- Slovakia – an electronic vignette (diaľničná známka / e-známka) is required for the motorways and expressways (D and R roads); the shortest is a 1-day vignette (10-day, 30-day and annual options are also available).
- The vignette is linked to the number plate — there is no sticker to display.
- The mountain roads into the Tatras and most local roads are toll-free.
- Slovakia is in the Schengen area, so there are no routine checks at the Polish–Slovak border.

What you must carry in the car
On this route a warning triangle and a reflective vest are mandatory – keep the vest in the cabin (not the boot) and put it on before you get out after a breakdown; ideally one per passenger. A first-aid kit is required in Slovakia. Spare bulbs are useful too. Missing equipment can mean a fine if you are stopped.
When to set off
The busiest days are summer Fridays and Saturdays on the roads into the High Tatras, and winter weekends in the ski season (Tatranská Lomnica, Jasná). The Chyżne crossing can queue at peak times. If you can, travel midweek or early in the morning, and take a break every 2–3 hours.
The most common problems on this route
The hardest part for the car is the climb into the High Tatras and the Low Tatras — steep roads where the clutch, brakes and cooling system work hardest, and where winter conditions demand care. On the long D1 run to Bratislava, fatigue is the main risk. If the temperature gauge rises, pull over and switch off, but do not open a hot cooling system until it has cooled.

Assistance, third-party (OC) and comprehensive (AC) cover abroad
Third-party (OC) insurance does not cover towing your own car. Abroad, assistance cover is what matters – check whether yours applies abroad and how far it tows, as some only reach the nearest workshop. With assistance we work with your insurer; without it, we arrange transport independently.

What to see – Slovakia

You drive to Slovakia yourself; we are the safety net if the car stops on the way or once you arrive.
